When we examine primary sources or read original quotations from people who lived long ago, we may have to reread a few times to understand their meaning. If the words they use are unfamiliar, we may need a dictionary for help. Study the following passage written by William Penn and think about what Penn meant. Then post a comment saying in your own words what Penn meant and whether you think he was right or wrong.
"All men have a natural and indefeasible right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own consciences; no man can of right be compelled to attend, erect, or support any place of worship, or to maintain any ministry against his consent; no human authority can, in any case whatever, control or interfere with the rights of conscience, and no preference shall ever be given by law to any religious establishment or modes of worship." - William Penn, Declaration of Rights

ReplyDeleteI think Willam Penn meant that whatever your religion is you are aloud to practice it. Yes,I do agree for what he said.
ReplyDeleteI think he's saying that all men should have the right to be whatever religion they want. I think he's also saying that no religion is better than another for example, Catholics aren't better than Jewish people.
ReplyDeleteI think he means that no one can decide the way another person worships or who they worship. We all have the right to practice our faith and choose what religion to follow.Nobody can control your conscience and can't tell you what to believe.I think he is completely right. He probaly just wanted everyone to believe whatever they wanted to. That way no one would have to be persecuted for what religion they want to follow.

ReplyDeleteI think William Penn ment that all people should have freedom and be able to worship whatever God that they want to.
ReplyDeleteI think William Penn meant that since the land they have found is not settled or ruled by government they all have the right to belong to any religion they want to. I also think it means that people should not be meanly forced or thrown in jail because of their relious faiths or beliefs, and be let alone to worship God in their own way. Also everybody has the right to worship God in their own way.

ReplyDeleteI think William Penn is right. No man should be forced to believe in a God that they do not believe in. The law should not interfere with your choice in religion.
