Sharing our History

Happy New Year Everyone! I am looking forward to hearing all about your holidays!
This week, we will read about families who come from many different countries to America. Although their languages, customs, and traditions are very different, they have something important in common - their pride in becoming United States citizens! Unless we are 100% Native American Indian, we are all American citizens because at some point in our family's history, our parents, grandparents or other ancestors came to America from another country. See what you can find out about your own family history! How did your family come to be in Bensalem, in Pennsylvania, in the United States? Who in your family was the first to come to America from another country? How did they get here and why did they come? Does your family have special traditions or recipes that originated in another country? It's fascinating to uncover and preserve our family history and there is so much we can learn about ourselves and about each other by asking the questions and sharing our stories.

  1. The reason my family is in Bensalem is because my mom is from New Jersey and my dad is from Philadelphia and Bensalem was in the middle and they liked the area. My grandfather's father was the first to get into the United States in his family. He came from Ireland in 1924 and he was only 19! My grandfather's mother came here in 1929 also from Ireland and she was only 16!!!!!They both came here by boat and the reason they came here is because there were no opportunities or jobs there. They met in Philadelphia and they got married here in the United States. They worked and sent money back to Ireland to help their mom and dad and their brothers and sisters with bills. One special recipe was scones or Irish sweet bread and my great grandmom used to make it.

  2. That's great Dan! I'm always amazed at the challenges our ancestors faced at such young ages. I'd love to try those scones!

  3. My ancestors made pottery and we have 30 pieces of it. My distant cousin, Marilyn Maxwell, was a famous actress. My great grandfather was a world famous magician and auther. My grandfather was a pilot for Capitol Airlines. His plane crashed in Michigan when my dad was 2 months old. My other grandfather was a baker at Tastykake for 35 years. My other great grandfather was a police officer. My five great great aunts in Clarinda, Iowa ran a large farm without any help from men. My grandmom whould tell a story about Sunday mornings the five aunts would come walking up over the hill with long skirts and aprons on their way to church. Another great uncle on my mom's side was a magician on the Docther Shock Show on Saturdays.
